(Antwerp 1580–1662) Ceres – An allgory of fertility, oil on panel, 35 x 47 cm, framed
Adriaen van Stalbemt received his master’s diploma in 1609 and in 1618 was appointed president of the guild in Antwerp, the city where he was active as a painter except for a sojourn in London in 1633. Stalbemt was highly successful during his lifetime and accumulated considerable wealth, so that he was able to purchase a large house. As is perfectly illustrated by the present painting, which shows accurately applied layers of glazes, his oeuvre follows the tradition of the great Antwerp masters and is closely related to the art of the Van Balen family. Works by this painter are preserved in the major European museums, such as the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam, the Prado in Madrid, and the Uffici in Florence. We thank Dr. Klaus Ertz for suggesting Stalbemt (personal communication to the consignor).
