Provenance: Collection of J. Harvey Cochrane Esqu., sale, Christie’s, London, 8 July 1977, lot 27 (as Jacob Mertens). Exhibited: Art Gallery, Aberdeen, Paintings from North-East Homes, Festival of Britain, 1951, no. 26, as “Dutch School”. In the course of time, the talented painter of still lifes Thomas Mertens has almost completely fallen into oblivion. That he would have deserved a better fate is illustrated by the present, excellently painted and subtly composed, still life.
