hanging scroll, ‘Bamboo’, 1st signature stamp (?) ‘Li Shan’, 2nd signature stamp(?) ‘Ge Feng’, to the margin and on the label verso an inscription: ‘Bamboo by Li Shan’, brush and black ink on paper, mounted, slightly stained, creases, some restoration to the paper, some losses to the paper surface, 80 x 48.2 cm (image size), 191 x 61.2 cm (paper size). Li Shan was one of the Eight Eccentrics of Yangzhou. His style was seen as powerfully expressive and individualistic, standing in contrast to the traditional painting ideas of the time. (CT)

Provenance:
this scroll comes from the Viennese Teltscher Collection which was established during the 1970s and ‘80s, when the previous owner visited China as part of a trade delegation.
