Central Anatolia (Turkey), c. 155 (140) x 112 (103) cm, 18th century, commonly referred to as "celestial ladder", stepped mihrab carpets are a subcategory of Anatolian prayer rugs; the present, very early piece with camel coloured ground is executed in coarse knotting with typical, horn-like gable tops, but the interstices display a complex and carefully constructed reciprocal pattern; the carpet is heavily worn with some damage to the foundation and heavily corroded brown, newly overcast side edges, both finishes have been reduced, sewn on burlap fabric for conservation.
