Lot No. 45

Tapestry,

Tapestry, - Oriental Carpets, Textiles and Tapestries

Oudenaarde (East Flanders, today Belgium), c. 464 x 320 cm, end of the 17th century. This tapestry belongs to a series depicting “River and wooded landscapes with bird motifs”. From the 16th until the 18th century, verdure tapestries from Oudenaarde (Audenarde) achieved greater renown than many Belgian weaving workshops. As a result of their fine execution and the extremely high quality of their colour, the animal motifs - featuring a mix of local and exotic ones -, the architectural ruins and luxurious vegetation produce a highly atmospheric and realistic effect. The present piece is completely preserved, with only minor repairs and without any appreciable damage. Entirely draped on linen and with Velcro strips for mounting at top.

Provenance:
Belgian Private Collection
