Keshan Souf Silk,
Central Persia (Iran), c. 203 x 132 cm, late 19th century, silk medallion carpet in heavily worn condition on linen; souf carpets create the impression of three-dimensionality as a result of patterns knotted in relief on woven ground with silk warp and cotton weft threads; for the most part consistently high silk pile with damaged foundation; since silk is delicate and becomes brittle with time, the warp threads in the present piece are torn in many places and the stronger weft threads appear loose.
