Designer Carpet
by Paule Leleu, France, c. 224 x 228 cm, about 1940, the French designer Leleu played a key role in the development of French carpet design in the 20th century, under the leadership of well-known carpet designer “Da Silvia Bruhns”, Paule Leleu (1906 - 1987) took over the carpet designs of the family enterprise from 1932 onwards, at that time the company received important commissions for the interior decoration of many ocean liners; almost square-shaped wool carpet hand-knotted on cotton warp in Turkish knots and mixed Baroque-like style, pile with only slight signs of wear, the foundation shines through in places at the finish edges, artist’s signature “Leleu” at lower right.
