The present drawing goes back to an anonymous portrait engraving of 1571 and belongs to a group of studies related to a today-lost painting with the sea battle of Lepanto. It was exhibited together with eight sketches in an Romako-exhibition at Würthle in 1924 (No. 56). For further sketches related to the painting see Reiter 2010, Cats. 405- 427.
