A library shelf unit for the Municipal Library of Marseille, designed and manufactured by Strafor Forges de Strasbourg, France, 1930s, - Design

coated metal construction, freely combinable modular system, height approx. 194 cm, width approx. 300 cm, depth approx. 64 cm. (MHA)

A shelf system produced by Strafor Forges de Strasbourg. Their sales argument was: ‘We must seek out opportunities for metal and look for new ways to use steel in all fields of industrial activity, including the manufacture of metal furniture.’ In the 1920s the company was a leading manufacturer of steel furniture in Europe. It owned three factories with a floor space of 24 hectares and had 1,300 employees.
