Lot No. 37 +

A group of standardised furniture for the ‘Frankfurt Kitchen’, designed by Margarete Schütte-Lihotzky in 1926,

for Grumbach, Frankfurt (attributed to) / for the Städtisches Hochbauamt, Frankfurt, overall dimensions: height approx. 230 cm, width approx. 215 cm, depth approx. 300 cm. (MHA)

Softwood for the frame, crème white lacquer. Example of an original Frankfurt kitchen, with a large drawer cabinet and 14 aluminium drawers, from the Römerstadt housing estate, 1927/28 (May, Boehm, Bangert). The kitchen was installed in one of the two-family houses located in a section called ‘Im Haidenfeld’. These houses had separate accesses to the lower and upper floors, a special architectural feature by which they stood out from the rest of the Römerstadt housing estate. Because of its exceptional functionality and generous storage space provided by the double row of suspended wall cabinets, the kitchen was used until it was removed in 2014. Solely the unit underneath the sink, which was replaced in the 1970s, has not survived. Overall planning: Ernst May, Herbert Brehm, and Wolfgang Banger, ‘Standardisation Department’ of the Städtisches Hochbauamt Frankfurt, et al., responsible for the development of the Frankfurt Kitchen: Margarete Schütte-Lihotzky.

Various types of wood chosen according to function (for example, oak against vermin, beech for the countertop, softwood for the frame), blue lacquer coating, sink, cast metal, linoleum.
