(San Francisco 1875–1951 Pasadena)

Provenance:
Van Ham Kunstauktionen, 2 December 2006, lot 115
Bonhams New York, 26 May 2010, lot 58
acquired from the above by the present owner –
Private Collection, Switzerland

After travelling widely across Europe, Cucuel was drawn to Munich and the area around it. It was here that he painted the present work.
Influenced by French Impressionism, Cucuel conveys not only a sense of liberation in style, but a true enjoyment of life, his favourite subjects being picnics, promenades and boating trips, and scenes of nature featuring women.

In Picnic on the Starnberger See Cucuel succeeds by his use of colour and light, in capturing the warm reflections of the sun on the water and its depth, as well as fleeting atmospheric effects.
In the foreground, a group is enjoying a picnic and nature by the lake. Amongst the three women is actor and singer Hans Albers, the idol of German cinema of the 30ies and 40ies, most known for his roles in movies
like “Münchhausen”, “Große Freiheit 7” or
“Auf der Reeperbahn nachts um halb eins”.
