When I first went to America in the 1950s, I saw many paintings by Gorky. It was my most important experience during that first trip... those paintings gave me courage. Intrepid, enthusiastic and full of love, Arshile Gorky taught me to seek my own truth without false modesty, without formal ambitions or hesitations. From his paintings I learned more than from any others. I learnt to search only inside myself, where the images are still rooted in their dark origins and unconscious sincerity.
