Lot No. 66

Erwin Wurm *

Erwin Wurm * - Post-War and Contemporary Art I

(born in Bruck/Mur in 1954)
Mother small, 2016, glass (colourless), on the base signed
E. Wurm as well as numbered AP 1/3 2016, height 38.5 cm

Provenance:
Private Collection, Vienna

You once complained that “a lot of people misunderstand my work”.
“They think it’s about the body or this object or that, but no, it’s primarily about the circumstances.” How much are you bothered by the fact that many people think that your art is funny?
It annoys me when people look at the work in an abridged form. I am definitely aware that my art is very accessible. You walk into a museum, you see a fat car and you think “haha, that’s funny”. Unfortunately, lots of people don’t go beyond this first impulse. However, criticism in the form of humour is much more subversive than criticism that’s laid on thick. As Markus Gabriel wrote: “In our late-capitalist democratic society, it is not tragedy but comedy that is the appropriate form of ideological criticism.” I’d agree.
