“I never thought of myself as an abstract expressionist per se, because I felt that figure to me was also very important, and that the idea of not painting the figure as a law against the figure itself irritated me.I felt that whenever you want to paint – weather it’s a figure, a still life, a landscape – they’re all possible solutions to the problem that you want to express.
If I start a non-objective painting, just for saying, I’m going to paint some color forms and let them work together: to me that’s not a satisfying image of painting, because it’s the painting and not the figure that I’m painting”
