Archbishop Angerer, as noted on the reverse, was born in Vienna in 1816. After entering the seminary and studying theology at the University of Vienna, he was ordained in 1841. He first worked as a chaplain in Brunn am Gebirge, south of Vienna, later rising to the position of papal house prelate. During his career he was appointed a member of the Vienna cathedral chapter and Vicar General. In 1876 he was ordained Suffragan Bishop of Vienna.
