Embroidered half-silk cloth,
probably Italy (Europe), c. 313 x 122 cm, about 1600, two related panels of ornamental or furniture silk, both parts are trimmed with a silk border along the outer edges and secured with fabric on the back, ground of plain weave with cotton weft and purple silk binding warp, nine horizontal pattern series feature niches containing seven pairs of heraldic lions on either side of a palm-like shrub facing each other, flanked by birds of paradise, the designs are in plain weave, floating and lancé wefts executed in silk, cotton and pressed golden wire, the front sides are heavily faded due to age, otherwise in good state of preservation without tears, brittle areas or any other appreciable damage.
