German tapestry,


German tapestry, - Oriental carpets, textiles and tapestries

probably Schwabach in Middle Franconia (Germany), c. 150 x 259 cm, beginning of the 18th century, a wool weave with silk parts. The present piece is in exceptionally good condition and entirely preserved – mounted on wooden frame. (MA)

Description of the image:
The tapestry depicts the story of Venus and Adonis, William Shakespeare’s first printed work (1593). Venus chooses beautiful Adonis as her first mortal lover. For a while they enjoy hunting together, until Venus tries to dissuade Adonis from hunting wild animals. Subsequently, while hunting wild boars, Adonis is injured by a boar’s tusks and dies. When Venus finds him, Adonis' body melts, becoming a purple and white flower, which Venus picks.
