Lot No. 77

Herat kelley,

Herat kelley, - Oriental carpets, textiles and tapestries

Western Afghanistan, c. 435 x 178 cm, about 1800, asymmetrical knotting on cotton warp; the much disputed city of Herat, originally founded by Alexander the Great, was conquered by the Persian Safavids in 1510, under whose rule it remained until it was reconquered by the Afghans in the 1749 war against Persia. As early as 1735, Nadir-Shah brought the highly developed carpet industry of Herat to Khorasan and Ferahan, where the so-called Herati motif was set to continue; although the present prominent carpet in kelley format cannot be attributed with certainty to a specific region, its asymmetrical knots, structure and colours suggest that it may have been manufactured in Herat, a very similar specimen with symmetrical knotting has been published by Uwe Jourdan as West Persian Kurdish carpet, all ends complete and original, in excellent condition with good pile condition considering its age. (MA)
