Lot No. 71

Sultanabad,

Sultanabad, - Oriental carpets, textiles and tapestries

West Persia (Iran), c. 520 x 420 cm, about 1840; the town of Soltan Abad in the Ferahan region is known as Arak today. It was precisely from this location that the first extensive exports to Europe were organised. Towards 1882, the English company Ziegler & Co established itself in the region, revitalising the stagnating Persian carpet production. The present oversized carpet is one of the oldest, still extant examples of this group. With very fine knotting and extremely beautiful, harmonious colour scheme, this piece constitutes a so-called Safavid "tree and shrub carpet" with cypresses, bushes and blossoming trees. The medallion with cartouches and appendage is strongly reminiscent of the famous Berlin crane carpet from the 16th/17th century.
Especially noteworthy is the extremely large, stylistically perfect main border with large palmettes, arabesques and cloud bands. Wholly complete, all sides secured on the back with a narrow linen band, age-related low pile in places, without any discernible major repairs, overall very good condition. (MA)
