Tapestry,
Lille (Northern France), Teniers Workshop, c. 297 x 546 cm, the first half of the 18th century, the series of rural scenes by David Teniers II (1610 - 1690) and David Teniers III (1638 - 1685) became very popular in Netherlandish and French tapestries during a period of about one hundred years. Their usually large-format carpets are populated by rough yet cheerful and peaceful small-sized figures that leave much space for the landscapes and detailed depictions of everyday scenes. The present, extremely large hanging features peasants in the foreground, dancing and imbibing after a successful day of harvest. This delightful scene encompasses several details, such as a henhouse, the farmers' dwelling, barns and workers transporting straw and wheat.
The carpet is entirely preserved with original galloon, secured with fabric on the back, no warp slits or open areas, but numerous age-related repairs to the image and along the border. (MA)
