Der "HFL (Hypersonic Flying Laboratory) Kholod" war ein Projekt von NASA und CIAM (Soviet Central Institute of Aviation Motors), neun Raketen wurden zwischen 1991 und 2001 gebaut. 1994 galt die Rakete als schnellster unbemannter Flugkörper innerhalb der Erdatmossphäre mit einer Geschwindigkeit von MACH 6.47 (4,310 mph / 6900/km/h). Das Gyroskop (Kreiselinstrument) befindet sich im oberen Teil der Rakete und dient der Lageregelung.
