Lot No. 130

A large Haida Totem (crest) pole, British Columbia, 19th century.

A large Haida Totem (crest) pole, British Columbia, 19th century. - Tribal Art

H. 194 cm. This pole is carved with crest figures that relate to family lineages, status and rights, very similar to the crests of noble European families. On the Northwest Coast today such poles are often referred to as “crest poles,” the word “totem” having been adopted inaccurately by anthropologists who had worked with Great Lakes tribes (Ojibwa dodem, clan). Konietzko explained to Madame von Bergmann that the Brazilian missionaries whitewashed the figure, and traces of the original polychrome can still be seen under the white powdery surface.

Provenance:
German Missionary in British Columbia.
A German Bishop, Bahia Brasil.
Galerie Konietzko, Hamburg.
Roswitha von Bergmann, Düsseldorf.
Private collection Munich.
