The present painting is a workshop replica of a work by van Dyck (dated circa 1628/1631) in the collection of the Counts von Schönborn Wiesentheid, Schloss Weissenstein, Pommersfelden (see S. Barnes, N. de Poorter, O. Millar, H. Vey, Van Dyck - A complete Catalogue of the Paintings, New Haven-London 2004, p. 292, no. III.58). The Schönborn painting itself relates to Rubens’s painting in the Museo del Prado, Madrid (circa 1616), on which van Dyck had collaborated with his master.
