The present painting is based on an etching, dated 1558 by Pieter Brueghel I. The etching is inscribed: ‘Invidia Horrendum Monstrum Saevissima Pestis; Een onsterfelijke doet es nijd en wrede peste. Een beeft die haar zelven eet met valschen moleste.’
The etching was part of a series of The Seven Deadly Sins. Envy is depicted as an allegorical figure of a woman eating her own heart and pointing to her attribute of a turkey.
