(Acqui Terme 1835–1915 Turin)

Provenance:
Private Collection, Italy, since c. 1900.
Counterpart to lot 512
Although little is known about Luigi Crosio’s life, it is known that he studied at the Albertina Academy of Fine Arts in Turin in the 1850s. He specialised in genre paintings and 17th-century costume pictures, along with Pompeian and Orientalist scenes. His compositions were much sought-after for lithographic reproduction. In many of his paintings, he reproduced scenes from popular opera.
In the present lot, the sitter is depicted with a kopuz, a traditional fretless string instrument. She is elegantly dressed in a traditional Turkish outfit. She gazes directly at the viewer, thereby creating an affinity between them.
