„Das Bocciaspiel“ [The game of bowls], titled on an old label on the reverse, signed, inscribed and dated Fr. Aerni Rom (18)86, oil on canvas, 45.5 x 75.5 cm, framed, (W)
The Swiss landscape painter Franz Theodor Aerni was active in Italy, first completing his training at the Accademia di Belle Arti in Modena before studying at the Accademia di San Luca in Rome. He went on study trips to Egypt and Cyprus, bringing back numerous studies from these destinations. After returning from his travels, he collaborated on the artistic decoration of the banqueting hall in the Palazzo Serlupi for the Association of German Artists in Rome, and took part in various Swiss art exhibitions. He returned to his home country of Switzerland at the start of the First World War. His landscape images primarily feature themes from Naples and Rome, but the Ticino alps and the mountain ranges of Grisons also make an appearance in his works. In his oeuvre, his representations of landscapes stand shoulder-to-shoulder with oriental themes and lively street scenes.
