Josef Nigg (b Vienna 1782), attended the required courses at the academy and in ca. 1800 was accepted at the factory as a floral painter where he initially worked under Parmann and received his first prizes as early as 1804 and 1806. His most important work dates to between 1820 and 1840, between 1819 and 1834 he exclusively painted his own floral compositions on salvers, vases and plates. He also copied floral pieces by older masters such as Huysum and Rachel Ruijsch, as well as the occasional animal piece by Hondecoeter. Many of his paintings were acquired by members of the imperial family, as well as by the courts of Naples, England, Russia, Egypt, and Persia. Museums and private galleries in Dresden, Sévres, Milan and London also acquired his porcelain paintings. His works were particularly appreciated for the delicacy of the colours combined with their vivid effect, the minute detail, and an admirable technique effortlessly able to overcome all kinds of difficulty.".
