Le Noir was one of the most famous Parisian cratchet-making dynasties. Etienne Le Noir produced cratchets for Mme de Pompadour, Mme du Barry, from Naples to Saxony. The company existed until 1820. Works by Jean Joseph de St. Germain, undoubtedly the most ingenious of Parisian bronzesmith of the 18th cent., are to be found in all important collections.
