Burning Friendship vase
ruby glass, blown, bright enamel painting, signed and dated M. Velíšek 1999, height 35 cm (Zí)
Martin Velíšek graduated in 1989 from the Academy of Arts, Architecture, and Design, where he studied in the studio of prof. Stanislav Libenský. Together with Michal Machata, Ivana Mašitová, and Ivana Šrámková, he belonged to the group of young artists who started to focus on glass painting in the 1980s and gave this discipline an entirely new dimension. Martin Velíšek covered his objects in probably the most radical way with energetic painting full of ironic figures and provocative themes.
The vase on offer depicts caricatures of Indians and White Men smoking a peace pipe around a fire. The rest of the vase is covered in painted toadstools. The vase originates from Cause Karel May. It was chosen by the author of the exhibition for the planned “Martin Velíšek: A Retrospective” exhibit in the East Bohemian Gallery in Pardubice, November 2016 – March 2017.
