Joseph Robert von Langer - 19th Century Paintings and Watercolours

Joseph Robert von Langer was the son of German historical painter Joseph Peter von Langer, the director of the Academy of Fine Arts in Düsseldorf, with whom he undertook his artistic training. Together with his father he travelled through Germany to Paris. In 1804 he travelled to Italy, clearly influenced by the works of Raphael and Nicolas Poussin on his return. He settled in Munich in 1806 where he studied at the newly founded Academy of Fine Arts two years later. In 1827 he was appointed Director of the royal cabinet of hand drawings, taking over the position of Director of the Central Painting Gallery in 1841. The focus of his oeuvre lies in religious historical painting which were influenced by the neoclassical style of his father.
