Artist around 1900
New York Scene, View of the Brooklyn Bridge which was opened in 1883, South Street in the foreground, monogrammed A, oil on paper, laid down on board, 38 x 51.6 cm, framed, (W)
This work shows the Brooklyn Bridge as viewed from Manhattan. The train indicates that this is a view dating to around 1887 as, from this year onwards, the railways ran with four and more wagons – the extra wagons were required to transport around 40,000 passengers travelling each day. The trains ran in both directions and large turntables were used to reverse direction at each end of the bridge.
