Tekke Chuval,
West Turkestan, c. 83 x 125 cm, mid-19th century, this Tekke chuval with Salor gul and “sagdag” secondary motifs belongs to the second generation of this group; until the early 19th century, chuvals such as the present one were only in use among the Salor tribes, after whose submission they would be adopted predominantly by the Saryk and, to a lesser extent, Tekke tribes; despite the original hooked star in the Salor gul, the guls are arranged in two rows according to their height, which indicates that the present piece can be dated to around 1850; in lieu of the typical kotshanak border this item features a “haibalbagi” pattern; the present chuval is preserved in very good overall condition with original side edges, its lower section shows kilim remains of the former back part, the ruby-red silk is heavily corroded.
Published:
Vanishing Jewels, Central Asian Tribal Weavings, Collection of Marvin and Frederica Amstey, ill. 27 and on the book cover.
