Lot No. 73

Yomut Ensi,

Yomut Ensi, - Carpets

West Turkestan, c. 174 x 127 cm, first half of the 19th century, both sides are characterised by remarkable finishes with massive “eagle” as well as bright “gapyrga” motifs with light blue ground, the traditionally divided central field features four large squares of equal size with “dogajik trees”, with “syrga” borders and narrow “dogajik” borders; since historical evidence of ensis being actually used as yurt or door curtain is scarce, this is still questioned occasionally, although discussions did not consider the partial survival of cords for hanging in a few specimens, which would prove that such pieces used to be hung at least in the past; the present ensi still displays knotted and woven remains of the aforementioned cords in the upper corners, it is otherwise heavily worn with very low pile areas, both finishes have been trimmed and the side edges repaired.
