George Keyes noted that the present work, which he knew through a photograph, ‘bears all the hallmarks of Vroom’s style in the early to mid-1620s and should be considered a major addition to his oeuvre’. He added: ‘Features of this composition could have inspired the 1626 London Riverscape (National Gallery, London), thereby supporting an earlier dating about 1623–24’.
