Giuseppe Assereto

Giuseppe Assereto - Old Master Paintings

(Genoa active 17th Century)
Adoration of the Shepherds,
oil on canvas, 60 x 74.5 cm, framed

Provenance:
Private collection, Rome

We are grateful to Camillo Manzitti for suggesting the attribution of the present painting on the basis of a high resolution digital photograph.

The present painting reveals close similarities to the canvas by Giuseppe Assereto in a private collection in Reggio Emilia (T. Zennaro, Gioacchino Assereto (1600-1650) e i pittori della sua scuola, Soncino 2011, vol. II, p. 608, cat. E30), datable to before 1656.

Giuseppe Assereto, the son of Gioacchino, is better known as the Master of San Giacomo alla Marina, a moniker devolved from his most important work: the Saint James Preaching in the Genoese oratory of San Giacomo alla Marina (circa 1650). Although influenced by the paintings of his father, his style accentuated a taste for naturalism, while his handling of the brush, deploying fine strokes and attaining highlights in white, stem from the manner of Giovanni Benedetto Castiglione called il Grechetto.
