Signed DIEHL PARIS, 2nd half of the 19th century. A dark stained and polished hardwood table, set on turned legs with X stretcher, a folding top decorated with marquetry flowers and geometric patterns in various fine woods, rich metal mounts in the form of female heads and fabulous creatures, a fitted interior veneered in rosewood and burl poplar with a secret compartment, and an engraved signature on the lock. Ca. 71.5 x 71 x 40 cm; An ebony veneered casket set on a moulded plinth, richly decorated with applied metal plaques of portraits in profile, with a hinged lid, a fitted interior veneered in maplewood, with marquetry allegorical motifs after the antique in partly dyed woods. Ca. 18 x 33 x 26 cm. In cared-for condition. (DOC)
Charles Guillaume DIEHL (1811 - ca. 1885) was a cabinet maker born in Hessen, who settled in Paris and produced high quality furniture, which styled itself on the antique; he took part in numerous World Fairs where he won various prizes.
