Munich, circa 1760-70, angels in flight with elongated, slightly twisting bodies, their hair artfully pinned up, skilfully carved limewood, original polychrome paintwork exposed, flaking in part, one angel is missing its arm to the reverse and part of the loin cloth drapery, length approx. 75 cm, (MC)
The angels exhibit facial features typical of Ignaz Günther, such as slightly slanting eyes, open smiling mouths and elaborate hairstyles and ribbons to their hair. The form of the loin cloths is also characteristic in that the drapery falls loosely in front of the legs from one hip and stands proud in an animated fashion to the reverse of the figures. The skilful quality of the faces and hands indicate that this is an autograph work by the master.
