Genrjúsai Seija was a prominent very prolific author, whose workshop specialised in products often of very high craft levels for the European or American market and for foreign visitors to Japan. His repertoire included both genre figures depicting characteristic Japanese types as well as sculptures of exotic animals often created in large numbers, especially after the opening of Tokyo Zoo in 1882.
