Sculpture of a cockatoo parrot on a branch
bronze with patina, non-ferrous metal alloys, silver plated, signed, Japan, Genrjúsai Seija (workshop), around 1900 (Su)
The dramatic study of a cockatoo parrot fits in with the classic production of Japanese Meiji casters, when similarly modelled statues of birds on branches were very popular with European and American clients. These were not just parrots, but eagles and other birds of prey, or peacocks, quails, pheasants, or mythical phoenix were also popular motifs.
The modelling of a parrot playing with a twig points to the perfect craftsmanship of the then Japanese masters, who mastered the work with metal, its patination and inlay.
