Carla Accardi *
(Trapani 1924–2014 Rome)
Untitled, late 1970s, embroidery (mounted on stretcher), unique piece, 120 x 160 cm, in wooden batten frame
Photo Certificate:
Archivio Accardi Sanfilippo, Rome, certificate no. A/11/2019
Provenance:
Private Collection, Italy
Exhibited:
Rome, Arazzi, Galleria La Nuova Pesa, January 1989 Montegrotto Terme, Artisti e Arazzi del Novecento, Palazzo del Turismo, March/April 1997
Note:
Carla Accardi executed the drawing for this embroidery on the burlap base. The crewelwork is by Manifattura Giacchini Zatta in Rome, where many other artists, such as Toti Scialoja, Titina Maselli, Giulio Turcato, Renzo Vespignani, Mario Schifano, Pablo Echaurren created their compositions to be “translated” on canvas with the precious art of embroidery
To the artists I propose a relationship of communal creation, I ask to work WITH them and not OVER them, starting with the creation of a sketch specifically designed for OUR tapestry. I drag artists into experimenting with textiles, I bring them into contact with materials, colourings, thicknesses and techniques they have never explored before. Like an actress I interpret the stories that they have written, simultaneously forcing them to understand a new language – mine.
