(Vienna 1873-1938) - Imperial procession on the occasion of the Eucharistic Congress in Vienna in 1912, oil on canvas, signed “R. Völkel Wien”, framed, (Lu)
A large-format painting depicting the ecclesiastical and secular dignitaries of the Austrian Empire on the occasion of the 24th Eucharistic Congress in Vienna in 1912. The “Weltfronleichnahmsfest” (Global Feast of Corpus Christi) lasted 4 days (12-15 September 1912) and was an impressive manifestation of the Catholic faith. The painting depicts the moment in which the procession arrives at Heldenplatz in Vienna, with the Neue Hofburg and the Burgtor. Cardinal Franz Nagel and Cardinal Gustav Piffl are visible in the first carriage, with Emperor Francis Joseph I and his heir presumptive, Archduke Francis Ferdinand, sitting in another carriage at the rear. Reinhard Völkel the Younger studied at the Viennese Academy. He was renowned for his painstakingly executed, detailed vedute.
