A large and early Fiji Island neckrest, 19th century.
Wood,53 cm long.
Small cracks and repairs. Besides protecting the - often elaborate - hairdo of the high ranking Fijians, the head was also considered taboo (sacred), especially contact with the profane earth might have led to losing mana (spiritual energy). These neckrests would absorb the mana and must not be touched by others but only by the owner himself. (VJ)
