Lot No. 568

Francisco Miralles y Gallup

Francisco Miralles y Gallup - 19th Century Paintings

(Valencia 1848–1901 Barcelona)
Ice skaters, signed F Miralles, oil on canvas, 61 x 50 cm, framed, (GG)

Provenance:
Private Collection Italy.

Preparing to skate on the pond is a depiction of modern life, and stems from the artist’s Parisian period. After he settled in Paris in 1866, he quickly became one of the most celebrated Catalan painters. He took a studio on the Boulevard de Clichy where he met celebrities such as Sarah Bernhardt, who also make an appearance in his works. He worked for the prestigious art dealer Adolphe Goupil, who encouraged him to lighten his palette. He regularly exhibited his paintings at the Paris Salons from 1875-1896 and his works were also shown in London and the United States.

Francisco Miralles y Galup depicted themes from the everyday life of Parisian high society, as can be seen in the present lot, which shows two elegant young Parisians partaking in a leisure activity en plein air. The artist captures the immediacy of the scene, which became one of his hallmarks. Just like Jean Béraud, he painted Parisian life during the Belle Epoque. He remained in Paris for 27 years.
