Cornelis Ketel, to whom this stately portrait is attributed, was one of the most prolific portrait painters active in England in the 1570s. Born in Gouda he went to London around 1573. There he was one of several exiled Netherlandish artists active at the court of Queen Elizabeth I. His friend Carel van Mander notes his portrait of Sir Christopher Hatton, of the Earl of Oxford, and various noblemen, their wives and children. In 1578 he even painted a portrait of the Queen herself. In this year also the present painting has been executed. It fits into Ketel’s known oeuvre and shows all the characteristic elements of his elegant portraits.
