Marten van Cleve

Marten van Cleve - Old Master Paintings I

(Antwerp 1527–1581)
An Allegory of the Mystery of human life,
oil on panel, 74.9 x 107.8 cm, framed

We are grateful to Klaus Ertz for confirming the present painting as an autograph work by Marten van Cleve. A written certificate (April 2019) is available.

Ertz writes: ‘This painting can be described as being in good condition, with the colours typical of the period towards the end of the sixteenth century […]. Alongside Pieter Baltens and Pieter Brueghel the Elder, Marten van Cleve was the Flemish painter of the sixteenth century who devoted a major part of his production to market and kermis scenes. From this genre we can identify various scenes, such as the horses, cows, and sheep, all of which appear to be driven to the market in this painting as well, which can be identified as an allegory of human life; or the covered wagons and peasants with their loads. Starting from the foreground, the whole crowded scene rises upwards like a pyramid, ending in the semi-nude female bodies at the roots of a large tree.’
