oil on canvas, 124 x 85.5 cm, framed

Provenance:
Private collection, Germany;
Private collection, Austria

A comparable still life painting attributed to Jacob Fopsen van Es is in the collection of Rajec Castle, Czech Republic (listed in the RKD database under no. 41218). Another comparable painting has been with Galerie Marcus, Paris (1965, listed in the RKD database under no. 16997). Fred Meijer, to whom we are grateful, has stated that the bunch of grapes at upper left and the oranges, cherries, and grapes at the bottom have quite certainly been added by the so-called Pseudo-Simons (active 1650–1680), who might have completed an unfinished painting by van Es after the latter’s death in 1666. Similar compositions by the Pseudo-Simons have been with Sotheby’s, London, 11 July 2002, lot 137, with Christie’s, Amsterdam, 8 May 2012, lot 10, and with Christie’s, London, 30 October 2014, lot 139.

The present painting, previously attributed to Joris van Son, is a late work by Jacob Fopsen van Es, with additions by the Pseudo-Simons.
