(Antwerp 1564–1635)
(Antwerp 1601–1678)
A rocky landscape with horsemen,
oil on panel, 39 x 48 cm, framed
We are grateful to Luuk Pijl, who confirmed the attribution of the present painting to Joos de Momper. A written certificate (May 2019) is available.
Pijl writes: ‘The work is executed in Josse de Momper’s usual loose manner. No Antwerp master is able to render trees, mountains and architecture in such a summary style, with loose dabs of paint not very different from the handling of nineteenth-century French Impressionists. The work certainly dates from the master’s mature period – a date in the 1620s or early 1630s is most likely for the present landscape with horsemen. Josse de Momper used to delegate the figures in his paintings to Antwerp colleagues. The colourfully executed humans and animals are here painted by Jan Brueghel the Younger (1601–1678), who often collaborated with the master.’
