Adriaen van Stalbemt

Adriaen van Stalbemt - Old Master Paintings I

(Antwerp 1582–1662)
The Entry of the Animals into Noah’s Ark,
oil on panel, 76 x 126 cm, framed

We are grateful to Klaus Ertz for fully endorsing the attribution of the present painting to Adriaen van Stalbemt. A written certificate (16 August 2019) is available.

Ertz writes: ‘Adriaen van Stalbemt, next to Jan Brueghel the Younger the most gifted follower of Jan Brueghel the Elder, adopted and developed many of the latter’s themes. Like many of his contemporaries, he based his art on that of this great example. In the perspectival interlocking of the rocks on the left, the wooded landscape extending beyond, and Noah’s Arch, which is partly connected to the surrounding landscape through the diagonally running gangplank on stilts, as well as the communicating animals, faithfully rendered in great detail, this composition is a typical Stalbemt.’ Ertz dates the picture into Stalbemt’s early period, the years between 1610 and 1620.
