Sebastiano Conca

Sebastiano Conca - Old Master Paintings II

(Gaeta 1680–1764 Naples)
The Penitent Mary Magdalene,
oil on canvas, 96 x 75 cm, framed

We are grateful to Alessandro Agresti for confirming the attribution of the present painting.

Another version of this work, which is signed and dated 1732, is in the Doria Pamphilj collection, Rome. Agresti dates the present painting to around the same period, between two works by Conca representing single female figures: the Sybille in the Museum of Fine Art, Boston from the late 1720s and the Allegory of Fame in the Accademia Nazionale di San Luca, from the late 1730s.

The present work is one of Conca’s rare easel paintings representing the Magdalene. The artist here renews the model of Emilian classicism in a more measured and graceful way, introducing a new quality of lightness and elegance, thereby opening a new current in Roman painting, following on for the style of baroque triumphalism prevalent in Rome.
