Cornelis Dusart

Cornelis Dusart - Old Master Paintings II

(Haarlem 1660–1704)
A tavern interior with drinking peasants,
signed lower centre (on the bench): Dusart,
oil on canvas, 77 x 68 cm, framed

The painter Cornelis Dusart was a pupil and collaborator of Adriaen van Ostade and was greatly influenced by the latter’s late period. Indeed, Dusart’s best works have often been confused with his teacher’s paintings. The peasant types he painted tend to be more grotesque and wild than van Ostade’s figures. Dusart remained very close to his teacher, whose bequest he inherited; he even adapted some of van Ostade’s works. Many of the frequent old copies after van Ostade have wrongly been attributed to Dusart.
